“The 2nd Annual Kings of the Court Basketball Tournament is a perfect way to keep the Kentucky basketball spirit alive and help out a wonderful cause,” says Malinda Elrod-Baltz, Police Department Investigative Assistant and event co-coordinator. Five teams will participate in the tournament to be held Saturday, April 21 at the Paducah Tilghman High School gymnasium. All proceeds from the tickets, t-shirt sales, concessions, and sponsorships will benefit Relay for Life, the main fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. The tournament’s goal is to raise at least $2000.
The City of Paducah Relay for Life Team thanks Mike Smith Kia, Paducah Warehouse Furniture, and Kaler Electric for being sponsors.
This year the Paducah Fire Department joins the tournament that also includes teams from the Paducah Police Department, Electric 96.9, City of Paducah Parks/Public Works, and WPSD Local 6. The games start at 11:00 a.m. with the final game at approximately 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 per person for adults and $3.00 per person for children ten and under.
The tournament also will include the singing of the National Anthem by Kendall Washington, the Paducah Tilghman Step Team, and giveaways including a recliner from Paducah Warehouse Furniture. Concessions have been expanded this year to include hotdogs, drinks, popcorn, and other snacks.
The first game will be a battle between WPSD Local 6 and the Paducah Police Department. The second game which should start around 12:15 p.m. will be between the tournament newcomers, the Paducah Fire Department, and the crowd-entertaining Paducah Parks/Public Works. The next game at approximately 1:30 p.m. will be between last year’s champion, Electric 96.9, and a quickly assembled team of players who were on the non-winning teams that resulted from the first and/or second games. The fourth game will be between the winners of the first two games with the final and 5th game starting at about 4:30 p.m. The bracket was set by a random draw.
Last year’s event raised $1200 for Relay for Life. Electric 96.9 was the 2011 tournament winner and currently holds the travelling trophy.
