The leaves are falling, the weather is getting cooler, and the days are getting shorter. It may be hard to believe, but right now is a perfect time to plant dogwoods so that they will be beautiful in time for next spring’s Dogwood Trail Celebration. On the latest episode of Your City at Work, Public Information Officer Pam Spencer interviews two members of the Paducah Civic Beautification Board (CBB) about the Dogwood Trail Celebration and about the various programs organized by the CBB. Plus, viewers will learn the proper way to plant a dogwood.
Your City at Work can be seen on Government 11, the governmental access channel of the City of Paducah. The episode also is online at www.paducahky.gov and the various social media outlets for the City of Paducah including Youtube and Facebook. Check the website for Government 11 program information, videos, news releases, and broadcast schedules.
During the first segment of Your City at Work, CBB board member Ro Morse outlines the changes for the 48th Annual Dogwood Trail Celebration which will be held next April. Neighborhoods across the city are invited to be a part of the trail. The trail map created and distributed by the Paducah Convention & Visitors Bureau will highlight all the neighborhoods that plan to light up their dogwoods and other landscaping. Morse says, “As long as you are in the City of Paducah, we’ll make sure the trail comes to your neighborhood. We want people to get a feel of our entire city.” Please call 270-519-1321 by January 1, 2012 if you would like your neighborhood or cluster of homes to be included on the map. Morse adds, “It doesn’t mean you have to light dogwoods. You can have your porch light on and have a spotlight on anything that’s blooming.”
The second segment of Your City at Work focuses on the proper way to plant a dogwood. Master Gardener Bud Qualk and City of Paducah Park Maintenance Supervisor Les Evans show the public how to plant a dogwood including tips on the size of the hole that needs to be dug and how to properly water and mulch the tree. Qualk and Evans also discuss the best practices for selecting a site for planting a tree. Factors such as overhead power lines, right-of-way, and surrounding trees need to be considered.
CBB board member Dabney Haugh ends Your City at Work by discussing some of the other programs organized by the CBB including Adopt-A-Spot, House of the Month, and the Annual Business Awards. Haugh also explains the role of the Tree Advisory Board.
