The Paducah Parks Services Department is accepting applications to rent a plot or plots in the Community Garden. The garden allows citizens who live in an apartment, condominium, or a house with a yard too small for gardening to rent a small plot of land and have a garden of their own.
The Community Garden is located in the open field at the corner of 14th and Madison Streets. There are 40 plots in the garden, and each plot can be rented at a non-refundable fee of $20. The dimensions of each plot are approximately 12 feet by 8 feet. Water is accessible at the site, and the garden is gated to keep out small animals. Community Garden applications will be available until all plots are rented. A specific plot or plots may be chosen as soon as the fee payment is made. The Community Garden will be available for renters through October 31.
This is the third year for the Parks Department to offer a community garden for the public. In June 2011, the garden was expanded. As his Eagle project to achieve the highest honor awarded in Boy Scouting as Eagle Scout, Matthew Rea, a member of Boy Scout Troop 7, worked with the Parks Department to expand the Community Garden. The project doubled the size of the garden from 20 plots to 40 plots.
Visit the City of Paducah website at www.paducahky.gov for additional information including gardening resources. For application information, visit the Parks Services Department at 1400 H.C. Mathis Drive or call the office at 444-8508.
